MARION - It may be difficult for a town to become the hub of the universe if no one knows of its existence.

Fortunately, Marion is taking to the World Wide Web with a new and improved Web site. The new site was designed by Terance Henry of Southern Illinois Small Biz Solutions and promises to include features such as video of city council meetings.

"They're really trying to bring it up to date," Henry said.

Other upcoming features include local alerts such as Amber Alerts and boil orders, job openings in the area and a zoning map, he said. The page also connects to Web sites for Williamson County Tourism and the Marion Civic Center.

City Administrator Gail West said the page features information on activities throughout Southern Illinois, not just Marion. She said the prosperity of the region is just as important as Marion and it also helps establish the city as an essential part of the area.

"As we see ourselves as a hub of Southern Illinois, we see that people stay here and go to other places," West said.

West said she received an e-mail from a man from outside of the area who was staying in Marion but attending an event elsewhere. The man asked about entertainment for his children and she was able to suggest a Southern Illinois Miners game. She hopes the Web site can do the same thing.

She said though the Web site offers a lot now, she believes it will continue to grow.

"It will always be an ongoing work," West said.
